The 'Knots' series explores the emotional and psychological landscape that surrounds decision-making. In these two mixed media works, the artist uses the motif of knots, both literal and symbolic, as a way to visualize internal states of uncertainty, possibility, and revelation.
In the first piece, untied knots are rendered across the surface, symbolizing the raw, unsettled mental space that exists before a decision is made. This is a moment suspended in time, when all paths are still open, yet a storm of thoughts, doubts, and conflicting emotions brews beneath the surface. The act of “tying the knot” represents a commitment, a step forward, while “untying” it suggests remaining unchanged. The work captures the fragile beauty of this ambiguous phase, revealing not only the tension of choice but also the emergence of one's true desires and values.
The second piece, 'Knots 2', offers a subtle yet powerful shift. Here, the artist introduces forms that visually resemble knots, but upon closer inspection, they are not actually knots—they cannot be tied. These "not-a-knots" represent imagined possibilities or false paths that, though mentally and emotionally present, were never real or viable. This work is a meditation on the illusions we carry with us, decisions we consider, hold onto, or even mourn, but which ultimately dissolve through the process of introspection and time.
Together, the works in 'Knots' explore the beauty and complexity of decision-making. Through layered materials including acrylic, oil stick, pastel marker, and thread, the artist conveys how our inner lives are textured, tangled, and in constant negotiation. The series invites viewers to sit with the unknown and find meaning not only in resolution but in the uncertain and untieable moments we all navigate.
