Abramova

Anastasia Abramova is a Saint Petersburg-born, London-based artist, exploring themes of identity and the emotional complexity of duality. Her work uncovers the beauty of ambivalence, showing how embracing conflicting emotions can lead to a deeper self-understanding.
Using subtle symbolic language, Abramova connects with viewers by addressing universal emotions tied to the human experience. She works with mixed media including embroidery, painting and collage, blending techniques that reflect both fragility and strength.
Her background in design, including an MA in Textile Design from Chelsea College of Arts, informs the intricate craftsmanship of her work.
Artist statement
"My artistic practice is rooted in an ongoing exploration of identity and the emotional complexity of duality. Informed by my experience of emigration, I reflect on themes of cultural belonging, transformation, and the ambiguity that often accompanies personal growth. I am drawn to moments of emotional contradiction, where vulnerability and resilience, sorrow and peace, coexist.
Working with mixed media including embroidery, painting, and collage, I combine techniques that evoke both delicacy and structure. Each element in my work is intentional and symbolic. Thread becomes a means of tracing inner tension, while scattered petals suggest the beauty of impermanence and the subtle weight of memory. My process is intuitive and considered, guided by a constant dialogue between restraint and expression.
Creating is both a personal and reflective act. I approach each piece as a quiet inquiry, returning often to the question of whether to continue or let it be, allowing the work to evolve naturally within the tension of doing and undoing. I believe in the power of subtlety and that emotional depth can be expressed through minimal, carefully chosen gestures.
My intention is to create work that resonates on an emotional level, offering viewers space for contemplation and connection. Rather than providing resolution, I aim to hold space for complexity, where meaning is felt rather than defined. In this, I hope to reveal the quiet beauty that exists within the in-between."
